Short description: Digital technologies have significantly advanced the preservation of cultural heritage, and our joint doctoral program develops interdisciplinary methods that combine automated image analysis with expert knowledge to explore, analyze, and open historical media collections to a broad community of users.
Project description:
Digital technologies have driven remarkable progress in the preservation of our cultural heritage. Historical photographs and amateur films form a vital part of the media collections that have emerged through large-scale digitization efforts. To systematically explore these materials and generate new knowledge, it is essential to develop methods that integrate efficient automated data analysis with the deep expertise of domain specialists. Our joint doctoral program investigates innovative approaches to automated image analysis and visualization across five interconnected research projects. The overarching goal is to unlock historical media collections and make them accessible to a wide and diverse community of users. A key aspect of our work is the strongly interdisciplinary framework, which bridges computer science and the humanities to address complex research questions in a holistic way.
